Yaroun is one of the villages that was severely bombed; most of its houses were destroyed or burned completely. Most of the village, populated by both Muslims and Christians, was evacuated during the war. Villagers fled to nearby villages and Beirut, leaving everything they owned behind.
To their despair, they came back to find the houses and businesses they have worked years to earn and build no more existent. Many of them currently live with their relatives or friends who were more fortunate than them.
After visiting the Greek Catholic priest of the village, we scheduled a day to visit the village’s Christian families in order to scout the needs. We visited around 50 families, we heard their experiences and empathized with their struggles.
On April 12, 2007 we went to the village to visit five specific families whose houses were completely destroyed and had started rebuilding them. We asked them to meet us in a department store in a nearby village for them to choose one of the three gifts: a fridge, an oven or a washing machine. They chose 3 ovens and 2 fridges. The families left the shop with teary eyes, grateful for the unexpected gift from the Lord.
We also visited a chicken farmer. His farm was targeted during the war and his chickens were destroyed. With some help he bought chicks and is raising them. Nevertheless, he still has to fix the chicken dens’ metallic roof that was ruined by the shelling. He needs heavy industrial plastic covers to replace the ruined metallic roof. Heart for Lebanon offered to buy the plastic covers to help the farm operate as needed.
