During the July 2006 war in Lebanon, local and international relief agencies launched many projects that reached out to the estimated eight hundred thousand displaced citizens. For months, Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations were involved in providing food, shelter, and medical support -among other services- to the victims that were drastically affected by the July war.
In response to the overwhelming needs resulting from that disastrous event, Heart for Lebanon, a relief and compassionate ministry, started in October 2006. It launched a series of relief activities in the North, the South, the Bekaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut, to reach the neediest of the needy. These relief activities took place from December 2006 to May 2007; and approximately 5,000 persons benefited from many distributions (food and hygiene supplies, fuel oil heaters, fuel oil, water filters, stoves, fridges, washing machines, bunker beds, carpets, sweaters, clothes and toys for children…) that were executed through a total of sixteen (16) projects.
Yet, after the end of these relief projects, the activities of Heart for Lebanon did not come to an end. Starting October 2007, Heart for Lebanon turned its focus to different community development projects. Throughout the academic year 2007-2008, the main emphasis of the work will be granting student scholarships to 120 intermediate students from 8 different schools. Every offered scholarship ensures the return of a child back to school in a safe environment with proper academic teaching, and a strong emphasis on ethics and moral behavior. This scholarship will take the student out of a poor desperate environment that is subject to radical and bad social influence. Moreover, Heart for Lebanon’s future plans are:
1. Iraqi Christmas 2007 project: during the Christmas season, Heart for Lebanon is planning on distributing relief packages that contain basic food and hygiene supplies to 500 Iraqi refugee families.
2. Center for a Better Community (CBC) Project: This project consists of opening a center in Nabaa – a poor neighborhood in Beirut – that will allow the neighborhood residents to benefit from the social and medical support they are in desperate need for.
3. A six-month support for 150 Iraqi families: This project is scheduled to take place from January to June 2008 and will support 150 Iraqi refugee families offering them monthly vouchers to help them cover a part of their living expenses.
